Did you know that in most EU countries, used clothing is considered waste and should be subject to stringent requirements under the EU Waste Framework Directive and Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Regulations?

Whilst some used clothing is not considered waste in the UK, virtually all exports to other EU countries should be subject to strict legal requirements.  Post BREXIT, the level of scrutiny that British exporters may be subjected to, could increase significantly.

Used clothing and textiles classed as waste:

MUST be exported to and/or through EU countries under the legal requirements of the EU Waste Framework Directive and Transfrontier Shipment of Wastes Regulations.

MUST be accompanied by an Annex VII document.

COULD be classed as mixed/hazardous waste and subject to much more stringent export requirements, if a container of used clothing is found to contain ANYTHING other than used clothing made from textiles/

COULD  be impounded if shipments do not comply with the law.

Exports of textile waste from the UK outside the EU are also subject to regulations under the EU Waste Framework Directive.

This course will not only give you an overview of all your key obligations under the Waste Framework Directive, Transfrontier Waste Shipment regulations, your legal Duty of Care and more.  It will also provide details of where you can find further information and access to additional services.

Areas covered will include:

  • Overview of your legal “Duty of Care” and its inter-relationship with the Waste Framework Directive, Transfrontier Shipment of Wastes Regulations and the Basel Convention.
  • Your responsibility to ensure wastes are exported in a manner that is compliant with Article 18
  • Annex VII – Green list and notifiable waste exports.
